This particular project was completed last year, but we wanted to highlight it to showcase its fabulous solution for an oddly shaped backyard. Right now it is oven-hot outside with heat indexes at 110+. While we love being outside all year round, this type of heat certainly makes our job a little more…interesting. And for this client? They get to still hang outside without burning up. Check it out!
Where is the best place for a Gazebo?
If you have only just started learning all the outdoor structure terms, you may be wondering: What is a gazebo and where should I place it in my backyard?
A gazebo is a freestanding, open-side structure found in gardens, parks, or outdoor spaces. It features a roof, supported by columns with open sides that allow for good airflow while still providing protection for the sun, rain, and other elements.
A gazebo can really be placed anywhere. In this outdoor space, it was placed in the back of the yard to maximize the amount of livable space.
The Concrete Paver Courtyard & Pathway Ties it All Together
Our first task was to work on the tiny courtyard located between the U shape of the back of the house. A pebbled concrete pathway with intermittent pavers covered his area and led to and beside the garage entrance. A lovely tree provided welcome shade, but the grass struggled to grow in this area.
Our solution was to tear out the pebbled concrete. We leveled the entire area and laid out a lovely pattern of concrete pavers in this entire area, extending it along the side of the garage. Then tying the whole space together, a concrete paved pathway was laid out, extending to the gazebo.
Not only was the courtyard visibly neater, it provided a larger space for entertaining, dining, or working outside. With rain drainage and foundation in mind, we buried the gutters so that water rain off was directed into French drains, rather than pooling across the paved courtyard.
Gazebo + Outdoor Kitchen = Love
Now for the best part – the gazebo! This gazebo was designed for beauty with locally sourced wood timber with a wood-paneled ceiling protected by a stunning Redwood seal stain from Texas Wood Products. The concrete paver pathway leading into the gazebo extends the way through, providing a lovely patterned floor to the open structure.
Electricity runs into the gazebo for so many reasons! A large ceiling fan is tied into it, providing much needed relief from summer’s hot, still air. Recessed lighting was yet another subtle touch and outlets installed at the beam height are directly plugged into by the string lighting (no messy cords hanging down!).
The electricity also powers a mini fridge for chilled beverages on steamy days or to keep meat and veggies cool while the gas grill or Big Green Egg smoker is prepped for use!
Imagine prepping and cooking in this outdoor area, all while the roof of the gazebo provides protection from the searing sun, the fan creates a cooling breeze, and a comfy couch awaits.
